Install Windows 3.11 in VMWare

Prerequisites

• VMware Workstation for Windows or VMware Fusion for MAC
• MS-Dos 6.22 Installer
• Windows 3.11 Installer
• DOSIDLE , WQGHLT (Use to reduce CPU usage)

Lab Direction

1. Create new virtual machine
2. Install MS-Dos 6.22
   • VMware show the message "missing operating system"
   • MS-DOS setup said "Please insert the following disk ..."
3. Install CD-Rom Driver
4. Install Windows 3.11
5. Install DOSIDLE and WQGHLT

Testing Computer Specification

• CPU : Intel Core i5-3210M
• GPU : nVidia GeForce GT 630M
• Memory : 8GB
• OS : Windows 8.1 Pro x64

Create new virtual machine

Open VMware and click Create a New Virtual Machine. Select "Typical" option, tick "I will install operating system later". select Microsoft Windows as guest OS and Windows 3.1 for version list. Give the machine name and set the location of VM file and set maximum disk size for 0.1GB.

Install MS-Dos 6.22

First, you need to edit you vm settings to boot from ISO file. Click "Edit virtual machine settings" on Windows 3.11 tab. Then click CD/DVD and browse to MS-DOS ISO file and click ok. Next boot your vm wait 'til MS-DOS installer screen show up, press any key to enter the screen. Finally, press Enter to continue the setup, set your DOS location,press Enter to install until met with finish screen.

VMware show the message "missing operating system"

Restart the machine and press ESC

Select CD-Rom Drive to boot from your ISO file

If you got a message "missing operating system" that mean VMware doesn't boot from CD/DVD, so you need to do it manually by restart the machine and press ESC button when VMware logo showing up to enter the boot options screen and you can select CD/DVD to boot to your ISO file from here.

MS-DOS setup said "Please insert the following disk ..."

Press f3 to exit the setup

There are 2 cases that cause this error, you didn't create a partition or didn't format a partition, to find what are you in just see Check partition

Check your partition

Press 4+enter

Gotcha, There is a partition

Exit you DOS setup screen by press f3 until the black screen appear, type fdisk, press 4 + enter. if there are the partition list on screen just remember what the letter of partition (use to format it) and format your partition, Otherwise see Create a partition

Create a partition (if you already created, skip this step)

Create a new partition

Boot your MS-DOS installer, Press f3 to exit the setup to the command prompt, type fdisk + enter. In fdisk main menu press 1 + enter , press 1 + enter again (or other option if don't want to create a primary partition), press y + enter to confirm. After the partition was created restart your vm format your new partition.

Format the partition (If you already created the partition)

type format c:

Formatting complete ! \0/

Boot to your MS-DOS installer, exit to command prompt by press f3, type format c: and confirm to format by press y + enter.

Install CD-Rom driver

Install Windows 3.11

Install DOSIDLE, WQGHLT

Change your ISO file to "31pack" that you download from my source. In command prompt type D: to change directory to CD-Rom. You can check by type dir to list the directory and files in CD-Rom. Make sure you have directory name "DOSIDLE" and "WQGHLT".

To install DOSIDLE just copy its folder to your harddisk by use xcopy D:\DOSIDLE C:\DOSIDLE. Now you need to change a little bit of DOS setting to run DOSIDLE automatically when DOS started so go to C: by type c: and edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file by add C:\DOSIDLE\DOSIDLE.exe to the end of file. The basic command used for edit file is edit so you can do it by type edit autoexec.bat. Don't forget to save your autoexec file after you edited. You can use mouse cursor in edit programs.

To install WQGHLT, just copy file WQGHLT.386 from CD-Rom to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM by use the command copy D:\WQGHLT\WQGHLT.386 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Finally add device=WQGHLT.386 to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI in [386Enh] section.
